Abstract

Mass attendance is decreasing at an alarming rate. Students need to be taught the importance of a personal connection with Jesus through the Mass to increase Mass attendance. This thesis will review the curriculum taught to fifth grade students in the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Then it will present an alternative presentation method, Luke’s gospel story of the Road to Emmaus. This thesis will argue that because children learn through stories, connections between the Mass, Emmaus and life can enhance the understanding of the Mass by fostering a relationship with Jesus within the ritual.
