Senior Art Portfolios

The senior art portfolios are created for the senior art capstone which emphasizes studio and professional practice, art theory and critical research. Students refine recent work and develop new work in preparation for the Senior Art Exhibition, which is the culminating experience of the art major. Students are introduced to professional practice skills: planning, marketing and promoting artwork, documenting work and preparing materials for grants, and scholarship and residency applications. Students learn to develop an artist talk, portfolio, biography, artist’s statement and curriculum vitae.

This body of work was created for the Senior Art Capstone and exhibited in the Bush Art Center galleries in 2021. It encompasses four digital illustrations based on the elements of nature.

I’ve created a series of creatures surrounded by a correlating landscape. Each piece is based on mythology and has ties to the real world. For this series, in particular, I explored a myth that can be found across multiple cultures is that the world was formed out of four main elements; Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. Things are kept natural through the color palette and scenes, but turn surreal with the addition of unordinary creatures and pops of vibrant color. In addition, I enjoy adding fine detail into my pieces which can be found throughout the series.

A tall deer-like creature towers over a grove of trees, a section of the expansive forest carried on its back. Dark clouds loom in the sky above as leaves circle on the breeze. That is, the element of Earth stands tall and serene for while there is gloom those turbulent clouds bring life. I chose these elements because they hold so much opportunity for stories to be wielded. When telling this story through art, we can deepen the narrative through detail and color. The palette uses very natural shades of blues, greens, and browns but includes a bright purple for contrast. Upon looking closer, you can see the texture of leaves, grass, and the furriness of the creature.

  • Senior Art Porfolio: Exploring Old Family Photos by Rhiannon Cooper

Senior Art Porfolio: Exploring Old Family Photos

    Rhiannon Cooper

This body of work is an experimentation of mixed media as well as an interpretation of my personal family history. This work has sprouted from my early childhood days when I would visit my great-grandma every week and she would show me old photos and tell me stories about them. Even today, I ask my grandparents questions about photos I find and they tell me new stories.

Color, texture, composition, and the contrast of abstraction and realism are key elements in the making of my work. The more realistic features are used to highlight what it is that I find most important in the photos I use. I like to use a square cut-out and find areas of the photos that I find most interesting. Often, it will be really small details you wouldn’t otherwise notice in the photos; things that stand out to me or remind me of the stories I have been told. The use of abstraction gives the work the feeling of the past. For example, I use a washed out ghost-like effect on certain background objects rather than giving them full detail. Texture has become extremely important in the evolution of this work. Adding texture to the various pieces is to give a more home-like feeling and to make the viewer connect to the work in a more personal way.
