Artist Statement

I use art to look more closely at familiar objects and bring attention to basic elements like shape, color, texture and composition. My photography recognizes unlikely beauty in everyday things and raises questions about how context and presentation affect our interpretations of art. It is an exercise in observation and reaction, and is often a spontaneous and instinctive process. My assemblages involve a more deliberate and strategic process. I enjoy the challenge of taking seemingly distant elements and finding a harmony between them. The compositions are inspired by the minimalist tradition of reducing art to only what is essential. The unconventional materials are influenced by the imagery and materials I grew up seeing in Wisconsin. The photographs and assemblages share the theme of commonplace objects presented in an artistic context. There is a sense of irony in the act of displaying unremarkable things in an elegant way. The everydayness of it all highlights shared experiences and common denominators across differences.
