Artist Statement
These small, thumbnailed portraits each represent a real person here at SNC. They are meant to capture their subject in ways beyond the literal – rather, through more subtle consideration. Colors, expressions, line quality, and mood are all meant to be reflected in the way that each subject has been translated. I wanted to keep them from feeling homogeneous; instead, I wished to create a unique patchwork of faces that can be distinguished at a glance.
To me, these portraits are meant as a vessel to elicit joy. The idea of discovering how traits and personalities have been translated into a piece of artwork is a novel idea; one that I feel can be appreciated regardless of the viewer’s artistic inclination. In addition, I feel that it’s a fun concept to see the ways in which the individual fits in with - and contributes to - a whole.
These 21 people have meant a lot to me during my time here. I hope that this project is enough to repay them.
