Abstract

Liberation Theology can be used as a model for Christian servant leadership by demonstrating that God calls servant leaders to first have a preferential option for the poor and marginalized. Jesus, the perfect model of servant leadership, calls Christian servant leaders not just to proclaim the message, but more importantly, to do the message through their works and empower/raise up other servant leaders. St. Teresa of Calcutta served the poor, while Pope Francis, a contemporary model of Liberation Theology, works with the poor and neglected in society. Jesus, St. Teresa, and Pope Francis demonstrate the link between Christian servant leadership and Liberation Theology, particularly as envisioned by Gustavo Gutierrez and Jon Sobrino, modeling action rather than words, to build God’s kingdom.
