I was born into the Catholic church in an all-encompassing way; it bled into every facet of my life and my worldview was formed through the lens of religion for the first eighteen years of my life. It was always difficult for me to be a member of the church, being a person who wholly did not fit into the mold that Catholicism reveres and respects. Despite not feeling at home in the Church, separating myself from it as an adult was and continues to be immensely difficult. On top of experiencing the internal struggle of coming to terms with drastically shifting my worldview, I received hatred, ostracism, and sermons from both the people who love me as well as people I don’t know well. Channeling and solidifying these experiences, this large-format triptych emulates three facets of my religious experience: the attitudes and opinions of those upset by my mindset and beliefs; my personal growth, struggle, and self-realization; and an analysis of religious consequences through multiple lenses. The three panels are designed to create a physical, meditative space that asks the viewer to reflect on both religious and secular concepts. Drawing from religious art history, contemporary philosophical writing, and personal symbols, Ascension is my journey through the church and coming out on the other side a different person.
