My work focuses on different digital renditions of movie posters. I wanted to make posters that could be found as a collectors edition of each movie and could also pair with each book. Some of my favorite pastimes include watching movies, TV shows, and reading, so I wanted to incorporate that into my work. I enjoy stories and narratives and wanted that to be reflected throughout my work as well. I chose movies that I am fond of, ones that are popular, and ones that are based on books to highlight through my capstone project.
I am really drawn to the posters that illustrate movies and how they incorporate different plot points and characters to create captivating posters. I like to look deeper at the poster design and what they choose to highlight. For this project I choose to make impactful posters with limited imagery and more negative space. I find that the posters I looked at that have one main focus point can be more moving than the posters that have many aspects of the movie shown on the poster. I find posters that present the movie in a more abstract way are more interesting than having a poster with the characters' faces presented on it.
The elements that are most prevalent in my work are space and color, using a lot of monochromatic color themes and color blocking. For each movie poster I found multiple reference photos of the original movie poster and frames from the movie to get a sense of the color throughout the film. I was able to create a unique color palette to use in creating a mosaic of color blocks. I also chose important characters to enlarge and others to be highlighted as smaller characters and objects confined into specific blocks. For each poster I created a textured pattern to add some visual interest and depth.
In the end I have enjoyed the process of completing this project because it branches off of some of my favorite interests, reading and movies. I was able to incorporate color themes, characters, and texture in a way that is presented in a captivating movie poster.
