Abstract

The influence of the Philosophy discipline is at risk of being significantly diminished at the two major baccalaureate degree granting institutions in Northeast Wisconsin. Internal and external forces, including low numbers of students declaring a major or minor in the discipline, a focus on vocationalism, and economic and budgetary pressures are forcing faculty members from both institutions to become increasingly entrepreneurial in the ways in which they attract and retain students. By responding to market pressures and proactively seeking ways in which to engage perspective Philosophy students earlier in their educational journey, it seems quite possible for the Philosophy discipline to reverse the enrollment trend and expand their reach at both institutions.
