Abstract
This thesis explores how yoga as a healing art can offer therapeutic benefits to individuals diagnosed with clinical depression, as well as how a yoga practice can be used as a supplemental tool to alleviate spiritual suffering associated with depression. Most standardized depression treatment plans focus on healing depression in two ways: on the physical level and on the mental/emotional level. Physically, medical doctors often prescribe pharmaceutical medication to help with chemical imbalances in the brain that may contribute to depression. Mentally and emotionally, many depressed individuals are referred to a therapist or other mental health professional to participate in talk therapy to alleviate suffering. However, depression not only affects humans on a mental and physical level, but also on the spiritual level. Yoga offers healing for clinical depression on a spiritual level and should be included as a supplemental tool in standardized depression treatment plans
