Abstract
Deacons have a role in the Catholic Church that situates them with uniqueness among clergy, place them between the Church and postmodern culture. Their formation requires focus to prepare them for ministry as a bridge between. A review of the history of the diaconate from the from the Acts of the Apostles to the second edition of the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States, with analysis of the rationale for the restoration of the permanent diaconate after the Second Vatican Council, reveals seven principals to guide the formation of deacons.
