Summer 2016: 800-Meters Program Sets Pace for Nation
St. Norbert College
The St. Norbert College track and field program has become an unofficial national headquarters for excellence in the 800 meters under the guidance of head coach Don Augustine, since his arrival in De Pere in 2007. Green Knights have achieved All-American honors in the event on 10 occasions during Augustine’s tenure, tied for the most by any NCAA Division III school in the nation.

It was a family affair on Thursday, Sept. 22, when William Miller lectured on the topic of peace and justice as part of an evening in which his mother, Shirlyn, accepted the St. Norbert Ambassador of Peace Award.

Summer 2016: A Wing and a Prayer

St. Norbert College unveiled a 128-foot mural in the South Teaching Wing of the Gehl-Mulva Science Center, celebrating eminent figures whose groundbreaking work reflects the Catholic intellectual and social traditions. The mural connects these historical greats to the college community, highlighting both their global impact and personal relevance on campus.

Summer 2016: Dr. John Neary: A Role Model and a Compass

John Neary (English) has served the men of the Sigma-Xi chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon as advisor for 15 years. This spring, the fraternity was able to show its appreciation when Neary was featured as an Everyday TKE Hero in the Spring 2016 issue of Teke magazine. Summer 2016: East German Norbertines Do Business in Magdeburg

In 1989, as the Berlin wall fell and – as the Rev. Clemens Dölken, O.Praem., was finishing his doctoral thesis in economics – the economic challenges that East Germany would face following reunification were becoming clear. Soon afterwards, Dölken – on campus last month for Heritage Week – blazed the trail for a small group of Norbertines sent from the Abbey of Hamborn to reestablish the order’s presence in the East German city of Magdeburg.

Mark Murphy (Green Bay Packers) and Tom Kunkel (St. Norbert College) between them preside over two great Wisconsin institutions. When Kunkel interviewed Murphy at the beginning of this year’s Sport & Society conference about the former NFL player’s career – a career that took Murphy from the football stadium through law school and business school, on to the courtroom and college athletics, then back once more to the stadium – we were glad to be able to listen in.

Summer 2016: Recreating Green Knight Football History – on Lambeau Field Turf

On Saturday, Sept. 3, at 2:30 p.m. the Wisconsin Badgers faced the Louisiana State University Tigers in the Carmex Lambeau Field College Football Classic. But this long-anticipated event was not the first college game ever played at Lambeau Field. In the 1980s, St. Norbert College twice hosted Fordham University at Lambeau for the Vince Lombardi Memorial Classic – a series initiated by Coach Larry Van Alstine ’56. And it was a spur-of-the-moment souvenir photo snapped after the Nov. 19, 1983 game that led to a much more recent Lambeau reunion for five former Green – making a new and lasting memory in the process. The football alums met at Lambeau in the summer of 2016 to recreate the 1983 photo op that followed an 18-9 victory for the Green Knights.

A longtime trustee reflects on his journey of service to St. Norbert College, beginning with an invitation from President Tom Manion in his 40s. What started as an honor soon became a deeper calling as he embraced the college’s mission and the concept of vocation – recognizing that all are called to contribute their unique gifts.
