This essay by Maggie McConnaha ’18 appeared in the Dec. 7 edition of America Magazine, the national Catholic publication. “People of the Street” reflects on the way that the life of a vibrant thoroughfare can foster relationships and strengthen a healthy community. It grew out of a humanities course she took freshman year that looked at the intersection of faith, art, beauty and community.

Until Bonnie McVey ’82 (Computer Science) stepped up as the faculty speaker at this year’s Academic Awards Banquet, few realized how deep her qualifications were for the task. McVey’s journey to St. Norbert marches with her family history in the area, with connections to the campus traced back to the late 19th century – to the years, in fact, before even Abbot Bernard Pennings himself conceived of a college on the De Pere site. Spring 2016: Beyond the Imagination

In the early 1970s, St. Norbert College professors Robert Boyer and Ken Zahorski pioneered the teaching of fantasy and science-fiction literature, responding to student demand for courses in these “lesser” genres. Team-teaching a single course that combined both genres, they developed original curricula, published anthologies, and helped legitimize the study of fantasy and science fiction in academia.
