Fall 2012: What Dreams May Come
St. Norbert College
Seizing the bright years ahead
At St. Norbert College, we’re in the business of realizing dreams – the dreams that brought the college into existence; the dreams that have refined its mission since; the dreams that we welcome along with each new crop of students. And each fall, as the academic year unfolds, we are reminded afresh of the many paths of possibility and promise that lie open before us.
On the cover: As the year turns, all seasons are beautiful at St. Norbert. But autumn in particular is both lovely and impressive for those of us who live, work and study in an arboretum. What’s not to love about a passage of time that sets half our trees aflame?

Summer 2012: Beautiful to Behold
St. Norbert College
An understanding of loveliness
St. Augustine saw beauty as a life-saving force in our lives, “a plank amid the waves of the sea.” It is his rule – the Rule of Augustine – that St. Norbert adopted for his order, so it seems especially fitting to reflect upon his words as we explore, in this issue, the nature of the beautiful.
On the cover: Faithful stewardship is a cornerstone of Norbertine practice and it’s a responsibility that the college community has taken very much to its communal heart. One of the many blessings that we reap is our collective ownership of a beautiful campus – the very campus that the little sparrow on our cover surveys from his perch atop the rotunda of the Welcome Center. -
Spring 2012: Academic Freedom
St. Norbert College
On the edge of discovery
Academic freedom protects the ongoing conversation between faith and reason that constitutes the Catholic intellectual tradition. In this issue, we explore the implications of this necessary privilege for a college that is deeply rooted in three core traditions: Catholic, Norbertine, liberal arts.
On the cover: The interplay between his scholarly and extracurricular passions is not lost on Michael Olson (Physics), who will compete in the American Cup Final-Short Track/National Age Group Short Track Championships this spring. -
Fall 2011: Arriving
St. Norbert College
Right place, right time, right person
Arrivals can be geographical, temporal or philosophical. Whatever shape they take, they mark the point at which anticipation and “Are we there yet?” give way to promise and possibility.
On the cover: For incoming freshmen, the toll of the Victory Bell at Convocation signals the official start of their lives as Green Knights. They have arrived in a new place within a new community, and at a new stage in life. This issue explores such moments of arrival. -
Summer 2011: Good Things
St. Norbert College
The grace of life’s simple pleasures
Chief among the things that make summers memorable are friendship, happiness and pleasant memories. In this issue we celebrate all three, along with many more of life’s simple pleasures.
On the cover: Summertime brings with it an easier pace. At St. Norbert, the semester-time schedule gives way to summer-session courses that leave half days free for solitary study, or simply time to find a tranquil spot on our tree-canopied campus. -
Spring 2011: Together on the Journey
St. Norbert College
Research partnerships open up new fields of possibility
It can start with a conversation in a hallway and lead to the furthest limits of the earth. Work undertaken jointly invites new perspectives, wider exploration and deeper understanding. In this issue, we explore scholarly partnerships that are based on mutual respect, enthusiasm and appreciation for learning.
On the cover: This January saw Tim Flood (Geology), Nicole Bader ’11 and Kathy Licht ’92 undergo rigorous survival training on the way to their five-person research campsite in the heart of Antarctica. Flood took our cover photo while the group was learning how to safely locate and traverse the crevasses that dissect the desolate, wind-swept continent. -
Fall 2010: Sport and Society
St. Norbert College
A mirror of our culture
A new stadium, a new mascot, a new academic conference on sport and society established at St. Norbert: just some signs of the way athletic endeavor pervades our campus, our communities and, indeed, our culture.
On the cover: Sir Norbert – “Norby” for short – helps rally the crowd at the second home football game. (It was a record high score for St. Norbert: the Green Knights beat Lawrence 77-26.) The college’s new mascot character made his first public appearance at the Donald J. Schneider Stadium this fall.

Summer 2010: Life's a Journey
St. Norbert College
The transformative nature of travel
Antisthenes said it: “To the wise man, nothing is foreign.” The Greek philosopher’s aphorism is the lived reality in academe, where scholarly and educational connections of all kinds build bridges across continents.
On the cover: Signposts on the De Pere campus align the St. Norbert College experience in its global context. A place of scholarship and growth like this liberal arts environment inevitably draws from, and contributes to, a world of discovery. It’s a place we call home, yes. But we are both grounded and inspired by a sense of where we have come from, and where we yet might go. -
Spring 2010: Let Us Love One Another
St. Norbert College
Love, extended through community, makes us family
The words of love and family knit together in our cover illustration are never far from the surface in conversations about the St. Norbert experience, where current students and alumni alike frame their time on campus in terms of warm and sustained relationship. The enduring and sometimes complex affections that extend through many different kinds of family experience are our focus in this issue.
On the cover: St. Norbert College was founded by the Rev. Bernard Pennings, O.Praem., who was to become abbot and whose motto, “Let us love one another” (1 John 4:7), is a call to the college community that rings down the ages.

Fall 2009 Gateway to Learning
St. Norbert College
Beacons of knowledge illuminate new paths to wisdom
The libraries in which we share our collective knowledge are evolving into wired and comfortable forums. Their adaptable spaces and innovative technologies stretch our traditional notions of how best to store and access the tools we need for learning.
On the cover: Framed by the wrought-iron archway on Third Street, the Miriam B. and James J. Mulva Library catches the early morning sun. The ellipse, a striking architectural element at the building’s northeast corner, houses on its second floor the Center for Norbertine Studies and, on its third floor, a fireplace lounge for comfortable reading and a wonderful new view of campus. -
Summer 2009: Caring for creation
St. Norbert College
A sustainable future rests in our hands
Institutions like St. Norbert College, dedicated to the furthering of research and the education of future generations, take seriously their responsibility to teach by word and example how we might meet the Earth’s need for gentler living.
On the cover: Wherever the Norbertine order has sent them, its members have looked for ways to meet the needs of the community around them. The charism of the order itself, consistent with Catholic social teaching, calls for a careful stewardship of the earth. No surprise, then, that environmental education and sustainability is such a natural concern for a college like St. Norbert. -
Spring 2009: Finding the balance
St. Norbert College
Sound economics at work
The work of St. Norbert College economists throws interesting light on the single field of study that dominates headlines today. Tough times prompt this look at the research, training and education that will guide tomorrow’s decision-makers. And, we examine “educationomics” itself – the science of keeping affordable those very institutions where such analysis and scholarship is possible.
On the cover: Chris Ayers ’97 kindly bent his animal-a-day drawing habit to our purpose with his cover illustration for this issue. “Balancing Act” started life as Day 1,063 of The Daily Zoo, a series of sketchbooks that Ayers began when in recovery from a life-threatening illness. It’s a nice take on the challenges higher education is helping to meet in tough economic times. -
Fall 2008: The Next Chapter
St. Norbert College
A most excellent celebration
It’s a new chapter for the college and for the United States, too. The inauguration of St. Norbert’s seventh president preceded the U.S. election by less than a month. This conjunction of events has us looking at new beginnings that stand in noble traditions – and the kind of leadership that will ensure success in the 21st century. On the cover: New president Thomas Kunkel leaves the platform after his inauguration Oct. 10. Behind Kunkel, the Bishop of Green Bay, David Ricken, and Abbot Gary Neville, O.Praem., ’73 lead the procession of guests departing the installation ceremony, held in Schuldes Sports Center.
