A Theology of Hospitality

Bridget Burke Ravizza’s Religious Studies Capstone students spent the first part of the semester doing a lot of reading and discussion, focusing particularly on how hospitality can be applied to various populations – populations such as immigrants, those with disabilities and the homeless. The group was then assigned a research project on the efforts St. John the Evangelist Parish was making to practice hospitality in Green Bay.

Two freshman classes in the Honors Program have now experienced “City as Text,” a unique common course that helps students understand how the activities and decisions of past generations shaped the present-day landscape – in particular, the landscape surrounding their college. The curriculum develops through onsite visits, discussions, problem-solving, and research papers.

Educating with Special Intent

Bob Osgood has been on the road for special education throughout a scholarly summer that has taken him to Indonesia, Latvia – and Dayton, Ohio. Since 2005, he has studied how autism is viewed and addressed in Indonesia in partnership with the psychology department at Gadjah Mada University at Yogyakarta. A faculty development summer research grant enabled him to return to Indonesia in May.

Abbey Encounters Enrich Exploration of Norbertine Roots

The Cornerstones Seminar, a yearlong study of the college’s roots, has convened almost annually over the past decade. The seminar culminates in a visit to some of the order’s European abbeys. Nell Benton ’01 graduated with a degree in sociology and a desire to work for humanitarian causes. Armed with a talent for cooking, she also had the idea that someday she might become a chef. Today, Benton, 37, marries her talents as the owner and executive chef of The National, a café in a Milwaukee neighborhood in transition.

Class of 2013 Knows Where it is Headed

The St. Norbert College class of 2013 has a good sense of direction. Mandy Nycz (Career Services) says 61 percent know their post-graduate plans and, statistically, the class exceeds the national average for securing jobs prior to graduation.

Cooking Up New Ways to Give

When children choose a healthy dish over Oreo dirt cake and fish sticks, you must be doing something right. That was the case for St. Norbert College Dining Services when they took part in the first-ever Kids Food Event, held last month at the Children’s Museum of Green Bay. The college team received the most votes from the young food enthusiasts for its turkey shawarma, a campus favorite.

Cranes on Campus

Construction barriers, heavy machinery and piles of building materials in the parking lot are generally regarded less as inconveniences and more as indicators of good health on a college campus. With cranes to the east of it and cranes to the west, evidently the prognosis at St. Norbert is a fine one.
