    The SNC Global Seminar trip to the African nation of Namibia in May was originally designed to focus on wildlife conservation. But since its inception in 2019, it’s become a course that opens eyes to topics far beyond nature and science, to include poverty, politics, health, communication, relationships and culture.

    Convocation speaks to the importance of a grand entrance: Students were invited to make their presence known on campus and ring the college’s 100-plus-year-old bell.The ceremony was the formal launch of their lives as forever Green Knights. Later that weekend, they attended Mass of the Holy Spirit, enjoyed games and a full picnic spread, and stayed for a concert and fireworks show before classes kicked off the next day.

    Elizabeth (Knox) Oates ’04 serves as vice president of consumer insights at Ulta Beauty, where she aims “to make beauty a force for good” by creating a more inclusive and empowering experience for all customers. With a background in international business from St. Norbert College and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin, Oates previously worked at General Mills and Kohl’s in consumer insights. At Ulta, she helps the company understand evolving customer needs, especially as beauty shifted during the pandemic to emphasize self-care and self-expression.

    Medieval literature scholar Bernardo Hinojosa (English) first encountered works from the Middle Ages as an undergraduate at Columbia University. “It completely changed my life,” says Hinojosa. He latched on to the experimentation and innovation of the period: “The beginnings of a literary tradition were being built for the first time,” he says.
